Ports are used
to connect external devices like mice, keyboards, printers or scanners
to interface with the computer. The physical interfaces for the ports are
located on the outside, typically at the back of the computer, but they
are directly or indirectly connected to the motherboard. There are various
types of port, each providing different data transfer speeds to connect
various external peripherals. The ‘Parallel’ (LPT) ports are
used to connect external ‘Input/Output’ (I/O) devices like
printers or scanners. The ‘Serial’ (COM) ports are used for
connecting communication devices like modems or mice. There are two types
of serial port, ‘9 Pin’ and ‘25 Pin’. The ‘Universal
Serial Bus’ (USB) ports are used to provide higher data transfer
speeds for different USB devices like scanners or digital cameras. The
‘Personal System 2’ (PS/2) ports are used to connect PS/2 based
input devices like mice or keyboards.
