The cabinet
does not contribute to computing as such, but its internal design plays
an important role in ensuring that various components easily connect to
each other and yet avoiding a cluster of too many wires. A bigger and more
spacious cabinet will allow for more internal hardware devices to fit into
it and since they come with extra fans, they help in dissipating heat generation
from inside the system. Drive Bays are areas or slots that are specifically
created to accommodate hardware devices like hard disk drives, floppy disk
drives and optical media drives in the cabinet. These rectangular slots
help to mount the drives physically with the help of screws that hold the
drives firmly into place so that connecting wires can be attached and removed
conveniently without dislodging the device. The number of bays and the
type like 3.5 inches or 5.25 inches could influence the upgrade capability
of the system.
