The small lithium
battery on the motherboard is responsible for retaining information like
the date and the time of the system, so that even if the computer is switched
off for a long period, the system can still compute and recall the current
date and time. Recalling the correct date is crucial for date related applications
and certain windows based configurations. The battery has a very long life
and is constantly recharged when the system is running. If the battery
has gone bad or is disconnected for more than one hour, it will lose all
kind of configuration information that might have set-up using the ‘Basic
Input Output System’ (BIOS) features.
